The England School District is introducing a series of new policies aimed at improving sportsmanship and conduct at athletic events following two major incidents involving England student-athletes during the 2024-25 school year.

The changes were outlined in a letter sent by Superintendent Dr. Judy Hubbell to Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) Executive Director Lance Taylor, in which the district detailed both disciplinary actions already taken and new measures planned for the upcoming school year.

The district's decision follows separate altercations during football and basketball contests that resulted in multiple ejections, game disruptions, and disciplinary action.

Football Incident Led to 14 Player Ejections

The first major incident occurred during England's football game against Drew Central in September.

According to reports from the game, England trailed by 30 points in the third quarter when a play near the sideline escalated into a confrontation involving players from both teams. The altercation resulted in 14 England players being ejected.

Because of the number of player suspensions that followed, England was forced to cancel its next scheduled game against Mayflower.

State Tournament Basketball Brawl

A second incident occurred during England's Class 2A state basketball semifinal matchup against Barton in March.

With England trailing by one point in the closing seconds, a turnover effectively sealed the game for Barton. Moments later, an altercation broke out on the court involving players from both teams.

The incident resulted in 12 total ejections, including seven England players.

Because the game was played at Poyen High School, a neutral-site venue in Grant County, local law enforcement opened an investigation into the altercation. Authorities later charged three England student-athletes in connection with the incident.

England School District Response

In her letter to the AAA, Hubbell wrote that the district is working to address what she described as a toxic sports culture and said school officials were deeply concerned by the behavior displayed during the state tournament game.

The letter states that the student identified as throwing the punch that sparked the basketball altercation graduated in May and has been banned from England School District property for one calendar year. Students who participated in the fight were also suspended from school.

Additionally, the district announced plans to identify spectators who entered the court following the incident and issue one-year bans from England athletic events. The punishment exceeds the minimum recommendation from the AAA, which called for bans through at least the first five basketball games of the next season.

New Athletic Handbook Policies Planned

Pending school board approval, England plans to update its athletic handbook over the summer with several new policies designed to improve sportsmanship and increase accountability.

The proposed changes include:

According to the letter, district leaders have met repeatedly since the incidents to discuss ways to improve the atmosphere surrounding England athletics and prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

School officials say the new policies are intended to promote accountability, strengthen sportsmanship, and create a safer environment for athletes, coaches, students, and spectators moving forward.
